StackExchange earned it’s huge traffic focusing on developers sharing code solutions to tricky and often undocumented questions on it’s most known site “StackOverflow.com”.
Truly, StackOverflow is an example of the velocity of knowledge, and the sharing of solutions solving probably millions (yes millions) of hours of developer coding time when they ask a question or find a question that was previously asked, and get in depth answers about how to fix their code.
StackOveflow and the Other Stack exchange sites have strick rules requring that questions are asked with lots of detail in terms of what the person posting the question has tried to find out, and requiring that they are specific about the nature of their problem.
If that is about coding, the site expects questions to include code that is not working, and links to similar questions and explanations or things the person needing help has tried.
The same goes for their English language site: the question rules require that the questioner has googled for an answer, hasn’t found similar answers already on their site, and that the questioner paint a picture of where a word or phrase is being used in context or, if they are searching for a word or phrase, the context in which it will be used.
Stack exchange has very active sites on specific computer platforms, music, instrument specialites, different types of games and more. Culture, technology, business and more.
Google and other search engines do a good job at providing deep links to individual questions/answers related to a search query… but I’d still recommend that people visit these sites and participate in the communities they themselves are experts in. It is a really easy type of community service you can do, and promotes the value of a people driven web.
Here is a partial list of their sites!:
